SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR FILLED AND SEALED LEAD-ACID BATTERIES
These safety instructions are to be observed when handling the battery.
When working on the battery, start by reading the vehicle's operating manual and follow the guidelines it sets out.
Keep these safety instructions with the vehicle's operating manual.
First aid:
If acid comes into contact with the eyes, rinse for several minutes with clear water before seeking immediate medical attention.
If acid is swallowed, consult a doctor immediately. Should acid get on skin or clothing, neutralise straight away using soapsuds or an acid neutraliser (bicarbonate of soda) and then rinse thoroughly with water.
1) Removal from and installation in the vehicle
a) NB: interruptions to the power supply may cause electrical devices (e.g. immobiliser, radio etc.) to malfunction.
b) Only install batteries that have been sufficiently charged, i.e. with a minimum terminal voltage of 12.5 V.
c) Switch off the engine and all electrical devices before removing the battery.
d) When removing the battery, disconnect the negative terminal (-) before the positive terminal (+).
e) Clean the installation area in the vehicle before fitting the new battery.
f) Clean the battery terminals and terminal connectors.
g) Use the original attachment parts, so long as they are in good condition. Firmly secure the battery.
h) Only remove the protective terminal caps once the battery is securely mounted in the vehicle. Attach these protective terminal caps to the terminals of the battery being replaced to prevent short circuits and sparks.
i) When installing the new battery, connect the positive terminal (+) before the negative terminal (-). Ensure the terminal connectors are securely in place.
j) Connect the existing terminal connectors and the battery hold down clamp as before.
k) Leave at least one gas outlet open to avoid the risk of explosion.
This also applies to the transport of used batteries.
2) External charging
a) The use of intelligent battery chargers is strongly recommended.
b) Never charge frozen batteries or those with a temperature above 45°C.
c) Connect the positive terminal of the battery (+) to the positive terminal of the charger, and the negative terminal of the battery (-) to the negative terminal of the charger.
d) Only switch on the charger once the battery has been connected:
e) Only switch off the charger once the battery has finished charging
f) Stop charging if the battery becomes hot or if acid leaks out!
g) Ensure charging takes place in a well-ventilated area.
h) Intelligent chargers with constant voltage charging may be left connected permanently and is recommended.
3) Maintenance
a) Keep the surface of the battery clean and dry, and only clean with a damp or anti-static cloth.
b) Protect the terminals and connectors from corrosion and treat with a Battery Terminal protector spray (Grease is not recommended).
c) Do not open batteries where the caps are totally sealed!
d) If cold start performance is insufficient, check the battery and, if necessary, recharge.
e) Stored batteries should be kept charged and cool at all times.
f) Check the state of charge on a regular basis. Recharge immediately if the terminal voltage falls below 12.4 Volts. (Intelligent chargers with constant voltage mode may be left permanently connected to a battery and is recommended.)
4) Jump-starting
a) Read the vehicle's operating manual and follow its instructions on jump-starting.
b) Jump-starting can only be performed using a battery with the same nominal voltage. Both batteries should also be roughly the same size
c) Only use approved jumper cables, the thicker the cable gauge the better. ( No less than 16mm)
d) Observe the jumper cable's operating instructions
